Staying Energized All Day

As an educator, your days are filled with non-stop activity, from lesson planning to managing classrooms and everything in between. When I was a second-grade teacher, I felt like I was being stretched in every direction, like Mrs. Incredible—only, it definitely wasn’t by choice! Teachers truly are superheroes! With so much on your plate, it’s easy to overlook your own nutritional needs. But the truth is, what you eat (or don't eat) directly affects how you feel, how you interact with your students, and how productive you are throughout the day.

In this post, I’ll explore why it’s essential for educators to always have food with them and how it can make a world of difference in your energy, mood, and overall well-being.

  1. Consistent Energy Levels: By 2 p.m., most of us are running on fumes. Having snacks on hand helps keep your energy steady throughout the day, so you won’t feel like you need to be revived by a cup of coffee or—let's be honest—an entire vending machine. We all know that once 'Specials' time starts, we’re all making a beeline for the vending machine or the staff lounge—wherever there’s food. LOL. A little something to munch on can make all the difference in staying sharp and focused when the afternoon slump hits. Just try your best to find a healthier option instead of the Oreos or Takis that are often available.

  2. Improved Mood and Patience: We all know how hunger can make even the most patient person a little short-tempered. When you’ve got a snack handy, you’re less likely to snap at a student who asks the same question for the third time in five minutes. Keeping food with you helps keep your mood stable and your patience intact, even when your class is testing it to the limits.

  3. Better Food Choices: It’s tempting to grab a quick sugary snack from the vending machine, but when you have healthier options with you, you’ll skip the sugar crash later. Packing your own snacks (ex. apple, banana, carrots and hummus, etc.) means you’re in control of what you eat, and you can fuel your body the right way—even if it’s just in between periods. Plus, your body will thank you later when you’re not fighting the urge to nap in the middle of a lesson.

I know - Being an educator is demanding, but prioritizing your nutrition doesn’t have to be complicated. Start taking small steps towards a more full and healthy life. By keeping healthy snacks and meals on hand, you can stay energized, patient, and focused all day long. A little planning goes a long way in ensuring you’re fueled for success—not just for your students, but for yourself as well. So, the next time you rush out the door, make sure to grab something to eat that will keep you thriving from start to finish.
