As you can see in the photo above, there are various ways to relieve stress. Remember, everything I share on my blog is not prescriptive. So, if you would like to try something different than what I suggest that is totally fine. There is no right or wrong way to manage stress. Experiencing stress seems inevitable especially as a young professional. You are likely juggling various tasks and responsibilities - some of which may add to your level of stress. Even though we can't completely escape experiencing stress, there are ways that we can manage it. Here are some ways that I recommend and why they would be helpful:
Create a regular and consistent sleep routine
I wrote a blog about sleep hygiene in July and one of the things I mentioned was the importance of creating a sleep routine. You would be surprised by the shift in your body that you may experience when it adjusts to a regular schedule. You will likely feel well-rested and recharged for the next day.
Currently, I am a full time teacher who hasn't even completed my first week of school. I teach 2nd graders and they have so much energy, it's not even funny. HAHA! By the time I get home, I'm ready to go to sleep. What I have been doing over the last few days is winding down around 8pm which sounds early - I know, but in order for me to feel rested, an early wind down time is best. I wake up no later than 5am, but as early as 4:30am on occasion. Getting that time of rest truly helps me manage stress. Don't get me wrong, my students are great, but as many people know, teaching kiddos all day can be stressful. Gotta love them though!
Carve out Hobby Time
In moments when Im stressed, one of my best friends' ALWAYS says "it's time for a hobby!" I really appreciate her saying that because it serves as a constant reminder to do something that helps me recharge. Many of the things that I am responsible for take a lot of energy and sometimes, having a reset through doing a hobby is extremely helpful. From painting to roller skating to playing basketball, all of these hobbies are great examples for managing stress. Having a hobby and putting it in your schedule creates greater anticipation for the week ahead.
Attend and participate in therapy regularly
I am a firm believer in receiving counseling or other forms of therapy. I believe that having a licensed mental health professional talk with you about the highs and lows of your day is critical to managing stress. Not all of us have access to FREE/partially covered therapy, but there are other ways that you can receive help. I have seen groups on the app called Meetup that provide support groups for certain things. Attending therapy regularly will hopefully provide a safe space for you to express how you are feeling to an unbiased individual.
There are various ways you can manage stress but I just gave a few tips for y'all to consider when you are having one of those days. I have ONE big takeaway for you: accept the things you can't control. Experiencing stress is inevitable in many ways. Sometimes the stress comes when we get ourselves worked up about something we can not control. The important thing is to let go. When you hit that situation that feels out of your control, just accept it and learn how to work through it. You'll become stronger and stronger as you find ways to endure and accept.
On another note, I officially launched my group coaching program for this Fall. If you are interested, please complete the form below and select "Group Coaching" so I can send you more information to sign up. Sign ups are now open!
